Renewable energy reaches 2.4 terawatt hours in Oman in 2024

Muscat: The Sultanate of Oman's oil reserves stabilized at 4.8 billion barrels in 2024, while production reached 363.3 million barrels and exports totaled 308.4 million barrels, according to data released today by the National Centre for Statistics and Information.

The country's natural gas reserves were recorded at 658.5 billion cubic meters, with domestic consumption reaching 56.5 billion cubic meters. Exports of liquefied natural gas amounted to 12 million metric tons.

In the electricity sector, production increased to 49.1 terawatt hours in 2024 compared to 45.0 terawatt hours in 2023, with natural gas remaining the primary source, contributing 44.8 terawatt hours. Renewable energy sources contributed 2.4 terawatt hours, comprising 2.3 terawatt hours from solar power and 0.1 terawatt hours from wind power. The Ibri 2 plant represented the largest share of this output with a production capacity of 1.56 terawatt hours.

In the water sector, total water production reached 519.7 million cubic meters in 2024, compared to 520.4 million cubic meters in 2023, showing a slight decrease of 0.1 percent.

Muscat Governorate recorded the highest distributed water quantity at 136.9 million cubic meters, followed by Dhofar Governorate with 52.3 million cubic meters and North Al Batinah Governorate with 34.3 million cubic meters.

The number of wastewater treatment plants reached 67 facilities with a total capacity of 147.2 million cubic meters. Statistics showed that desalination plants accounted for 89 percent of total water production, while wells contributed 11 percent, maintaining proportions similar to the previous year.
