Muscat: be’ah’s plans to handle the municipal waste management across all of Muscat includes the deployment of over 13,500 bins in the capital.
be’ah, which is also known as Oman Environment Services Holding Company, has taken over managing all of the municipal solid waste from Muscat Municipality. be’ah had already been in charge of some parts of the city, including Al Seeb and Bausher since 2017, but began to expand its operations to Al Amerat and the rest of the wilayats on Monday, 15 July.
However, Muscat Municipality will still be in charge of cleaning and public maintenance.
A spokesman for be’ah said, “The company has increased the number of bins in each wilayat and added the new 2,400 litre bin for the first time in Muscat, which will help minimise the number of small bins in populated areas. be’ah is allocating more than 13,500 bins throughout residential areas, tourist sites, and commercial zones in the governorate.”
The takeover of these areas will be completed in a year’s time.
“be’ah is taking waste management sector to a whole new level,” said the spokesperson.
“It is supporting the process by providing advanced transport trucks that have a side-pull feature to run an efficient and smooth waste collection system. The sector takeover process will take about six to ten months and is supervised by a number of technical personnel to ensure safe waste collection and disposal.”
“Various awareness programmes will take place in-line with the process,” he added. These programmes aim to improve the knowledge of Muscat residents about proper waste disposal. All collected waste will be eventually transported to Al Multaqa Engineered Landfill in Al Amerat.”
As well as the man-made landfill facility in Al Amerat, the waste management infrastructure in Muscat includes the transfer station in Bausher. It is expected that Muscat Municipality will hand over these facilities by year-end.
