Paris: Oman has continued its progress in the 2025 Global Press Freedom Index, climbing three places from 137th to 134th globally.
The index, published by Reporters Without Borders (RSF)—a Paris-based organisation with consultative status at the United Nations—assesses press freedom conditions across 180 countries and territories annually. It evaluates five key criteria: legal framework, political context, economic and socio-cultural environment, and safety of journalists.
Last year, Oman introduced a new media law, aligning with evolving developments in the media sector. The legislation safeguards journalists' rights and ensures freedom of opinion and expression in accordance with the country’s Basic Law.
