Oman joins world in celebrating International Tourist Guide Day

Muscat: Represented by the Ministry of Heritage and Tourism, the Sultanate of Oman has joined the global community in celebrating the International Tourist Guide Day, which falls on 21 February every year.

The event seeks to express appreciation for the role of tour guides in providing historical, cultural and tourist information about tourism landmarks, sites and hotspots .

The Ministry of Heritage and Tourism celebrates the international occasion in recognition of the role of Omani tour guides in making a visit to the Sultanate of Oman a source of inspiration for visitors, offering them a wide range of information and providing them with the most memorable experiences.

Anwar Mohammed Al Mahrouqi, Head of the Tourism Guidance Department at the Ministry of Heritage and Tourism, stressed the importance of highlighting the vital role of tour guides in activating the tourism sector.

He pointed out that tour guides serve as ambassadors for the Sultanate of Oman and that they constitute a tourist’s gateway to understanding Oman’s historical, natural, cultural and environmental features.

As many as 1,175 licenses were issued for tourist guides by the Ministry of Heritage and Tourism until the end of 2024, said Al Mahrouqi.

He explained that English language tops licensed languages for tour guides, some of whom were licensed in other foreign languages ​​like French, German, Spanish, Italian and Russian.

Al Mahrouqi added that 101 Omani female guides were licensed as part of the ministry’s plan to engage both to act as partners in implementing its plans and strategies set to advance the tourism sector.
