Muscat: A project to reduce congestion caused due to cargo trucks at the Al Mawaleh Market is being worked on by Muscat Municipality.
In a statement, the municipality said, "Through this project, Muscat Municipality hopes to provide a practical solution to the issue of overlap and overcrowding in the market, because of the convergence of different vehicles."
"The project is expected to be completed months from now," the statement said.
The response came after a tweet by a citizen complaining of the congestion in the market as shoppers move alongside the trucks, which carry cargo. The tweet called for the municipality to determine times for loading and unloading of goods in the market as well as a separate parking area for trucks, away from customers.
The agency in its statement added, "The nature of market operations requires the carriage of goods from stores to vending shops and refrigerated carriers almost all day long."
"A project to divide the market into five areas is currently being implemented, with the aim of separating market entrances and exits, as well as separating the route for trucks from the route for light vehicles."
