Muscat: The Ministry of Transport, Communications and Information Technology is making efforts to make the transport sector one of the major contributors to economic and tourism development.
The General Secretariat of the Tender Board has awarded the dualisation of the Adam-Thumrait Road for parts (third, fourth and fifth) and the Jabal Shams Road at a total value of OMR278,452,322.
Eng. Yousef bin Abdullah Al-Mujaini, Director General of Roads and Land Transport at the Ministry of Transport, Communications and Information Technology, said that the implementation of the dualisation parts of the Adam-Thumrait Road will begin in the beginning of 2025 after the completion of the contractual procedures, and the project implementation period is 36 months in addition to 90 days for preparations.
He stressed that the dualisation of Adam-Thumrait Road after its completion is one of the longest projects implemented by the Ministry of Transport, Communications and Information Technology, noting that this project will open promising avenues in logistics, economic, and tourism sectors.
He explained that the third part of the dualisation of Adam-Thumrait Road starts from the Wilayat of Haima and ends in the Wilayat of Maqshin with a length of 132.5 km and includes the construction of safe entrances and exits to and from the areas, in addition to 16 lanes for turning and the construction of one bridge and service roads, two truck weigh stations, 4 rest areas, 21 waiting areas, 8 emergency central openings, 22 parking lots, 115 reinforced concrete box culverts for water drainage, and 88 pipe drainage channels to drain water in the middle, in addition to the construction of central dams and its protection works.
He added that the third part of the road also includes rebuilding the current road in the valley sites, removing part of the current road, protection works and channels, and providing new multi-cell square drainage channels in the current flood path sites.
He pointed out that the fourth part of the Adam-Thumrait road dualisation starts from the Wilayat of Maqshin, passing through Qatabit and up to Duka, with a length of 135 kilometres. It includes the construction of safe entrances and exits from the areas and 14 lanes for turning, in addition to the construction of 25 parking lots, 3 rest areas, 8 central emergency openings and about 241 reinforced concrete box culverts for water, 95 water drainage channels from pipes to drain water in the middle, central dams and dam protection.
As for the fifth part of the Adam-Thumrait road dualisation, Engineer Yousef Al-Majini explained that it starts from "Dokah" and ends in the Wilayat of Thumrait with a length exceeding 132 kilometres, and includes the construction of safe entrances and exits for entry and exit to and from the areas, 20 lanes for turning, in addition to the construction of 16 side parking lots and a truck weighing station, 5 rest areas and 8 central emergency openings, in addition to about 101 square box culverts made of reinforced concrete for transverse drainage of water, 110 drainage channels for central drainage of water, central dams and dam protection.
Regarding the roads of Jebel Shams, he indicated that a road will be built with a width of 3.5 metres for each lane and a width of 0.5 metres on the outer shoulder from the end of the existing asphalt road at the beginning of Jebel Shams to Jebel Sarat with a length of about 26 kilometres, in addition to the implementation of a 6-kilometre link from the Dar Al-Suda area to Dar Al-Aqour and linking it to the road heading to the resorts in Jebel Shams.
The Director General of Roads and Land Transport at the Ministry of Transport, Communications and Information Technology stated that the Jebel Shams Road will be a tourist road linking the residential complexes located around the Sarat and Shams Mountains with the South Al Batinah and Al Dhahirah Governorates, noting that its implementation period is 24 months and it is expected to start at the beginning of next year.
