MUSCAT: Rashid Jaber is set to begin a new chapter as head coach of the Oman national football team with a sense of déjà vu.
Over 22 years ago on a cold January night, Jaber guided Oman to a memorable 3-1 victory over Kuwait during the 15th Gulf Cup in Riyadh, the only win in that tournament.
The significance of that win can be gauged by the fact that it was only the third win for Red Warriors in the regional tournament since their debut in 1974. Much water has flown since then with Oman capturing the title twice (2009 and 2017-18) and finishing runners-up thrice (2004, 2007, 2023).
On Thursday, Jaber will lead the Red Warriors once again in a crucial AFC Asian Qualifiers match - this time against the same opponent - at the Sultan Qaboos Sports Complex. The Group B clash in the Road to 2026 World Cup kicks off at 8 pm, with Oman eager to revive their campaign after a disappointing start.
Back in 2002, Jaber led the Red Warriors as head coach, and following the recent dismissal of Czech coach Jaroslav Silhavy, he steps back into the role, facing the challenge of reigniting Oman’s campaign after two consecutive defeats. With both teams yet to register a win, Oman and Kuwait are eager to revive their prospects in the qualifiers.
At Wednesday’s pre-match press conference, Jaber stressed the significance of the game, calling it “crucial” to Oman’s hopes of staying in contention.
The team currently sits at the bottom of the group after a 1-0 loss to Iraq in Basra and a 3-1 defeat to South Korea in Muscat. Only a victory will keep their qualification hopes alive.
Despite the slow start, Oman can find optimism in their strong record against Kuwait, having won all three of their most recent encounters. Jaber, newly appointed to rejuvenate Oman’s campaign, is banking on an aggressive home performance. “The boys are ready and realise that the match is crucial. We will go out for a win, and I trust my boys will deliver a positive result,” he said.
A fresh start
The experienced coach, who previously led Seeb Club to AFC Cup glory- the only Omani club to win a continental title - added, “A win will give us a fresh start and motivate our players for the remaining games.”
Jaber acknowledged the challenge posed by Kuwait, praising their defensive organisation and experienced players, but remained confident.
“The group is difficult because all teams are evenly matched. However, we have the capabilities and experience to grab three points tomorrow,” he said.
