Muscat: The National Heart Centre has many achievements in the field of cardiac surgery and cardiac care, reflecting the great and qualitative progress witnessed by the Sultanate of Oman in this vital sector to provide high-quality medicare to citizens and residents.

Dr. Najib bin Zahran Al Rawahy, Director of the National Heart Centre, said: ”The centre, since its opening in 2015,  has performed 4,274 heart surgeries for children, and 4,094 surgeries for adults, and 154 cases were dealt by using extracorporeal oxygenation device (ECMO), and 30,676 procedures done for cardiac catheterisation interventions for arteries.

He added that the centre succeeded in performing 4,310 cardiac catheterisation interventions for children and 395 for adults, and 2,206 cardiac devices were implanted.

Al Rawahi pointed out that the centre includes a variety of specialised clinics, including 3D echocardiography clinics, virtual clinics, visiting physician clinics in the regions, a pregnant heart clinic, a fetal heart clinic, a pre-anesthesia clinic, a pre-catheterization clinic, a heart clinic for adults and children, a heart surgery clinic for adults and children, a heart failure clinic for adults and children, and a congenital heart defect clinic for adults and children.

Al Rawahi stressed that the centre’s role is not limited to providing health care only, but it also boasts of distinguished scientific achievements, as it won first place in the number of researches at the Royal Hospital. Two doctors and a nurse from the centre were honoured for obtaining first place in their fields, and 310 were trained in various fields of heart care.

 Al Rawahi stated that the centre has achieved many accomplishments at the international level, and the Sultanate of Oman is the first in the Middle East to successfully plug a heart hole (Atrial Septal Venosus Defect) in 2018.

The centre also received the Gold Award for the best project at the level of hospitals in the world during the International Hospital Federation (IHF) meeting, in addition to the Best Clinical Case Award from the Gulf Heart Conference 2019. It has also performed many qualitative and complex operations globally and regionally.

He explained that the National Heart Centre plays a major role in spreading knowledge through scientific research, and in this regard, 274 scientific research papers have been published in peer-reviewed journals and participated in 93 international lectures, with live broadcasts of several surgical operations at international conferences.

Advanced cardiac care

He emphasised the centre’s efforts to enhance its position as a leading destination for advanced cardiac care in the Sultanate of Oman and the region, with its commitment to training medical personnel and providing the latest therapeutic technologies.

 Dr. Najib bin Zahran Al Rawahy, Director of the National Heart Centre, pointed out that in its tenth year since its opening, the centre launched a campaign “Heart of the Nation,” which coincides with World Heart Day and seeks to enhance community awareness of the centre’s role in healthcare for patients in the Sultanate of Oman.
