Salalah: The Directorate General of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources in Dhofar Governorate is following up on the implementation of the first phase of the ginger cultivation project in the Wilayats of Rakhyut and Dhalkut with help from the Agricultural and Fisheries Development Fund.

The first phase of ginger cultivation by 30 farmers started in June 2024 on an area estimated at 3 acres, and the harvests are expected to reach between 20 and 30 tonnes.

The Director of the Agricultural Development Department at the General Directorate of Agricultural Wealth, Fisheries and Water Resources in Dhofar Governorate said that the first season of ginger cultivation in the governorate began in mid-June and will continue for 8 to 9 months until the scheduled harvest in February 2025.

He pointed out that the project, in its first phase in the Wilayats of Rakhyut and Dhalkut, also provides technical support and guidance to farmers for land preparation, installation of modern irrigation system, and following up from the beginning of planting to the time of harvesting, indicating that the implementation of the project came after the success of turmeric cultivation project in Dhofar Governorate, which is being implemented for the third year in a row.

He added that the project management team will work on promoting the product in the private sector to purchase the ginger and market it in the future, explaining that the directorate is distributing subsidised ginger roots to the farmers.

It is noteworthy that the project aims to motivate and encourage farmers to cultivate ginger in the mountains of Dhofar Governorate, as it is a crop with added economic value and contains health and nutritional benefits, with increasing demand for it locally and globally.

The project also aims to enhance reliance on the ginger crop as a source of income for local productive families in these communities, thus ensuring their stability in their homelands and creating job opportunities for their children.
