Muscat: HCG Hospital, Mumbai, India in association with Muscat Family Physicians Group and Global Treatment Services conducted an International Medical Conference Advances in the Surgical treatment of Breast Cancer and Role Medical Oncology. It was held at Hotel Intercity Muscat, on Friday 16th August, 2024.
Dr. Salim, Senior Consultant and Head of Department, Breast Surgery, National Oncology Center, Oman, was the Guest of Honour.
Breast Cancer accounts for highest 13% of total Cancers detected in Oman. In females it is higher at 21% of all the cancers detected. Breast Cancers are detected at a younger median age of 49 in Omani women. Unfortunately – it is detected mostly on 3rd & 4th stage where 5 year survival rate stands low at 67%.
Dr. Viju Murthy, Consultant Breast Surgeon HCG Hospital Mumbai in her presentation emphasised to increase awareness about screening and early detection as Breast cancer numbers are increasing all over the world and the outcome of the treatment solely depends on it.
She also discussed the different surgical approaches for management of early as well as advanced breast cancer including different forms of scar less/ hidden scar techniques and reconstruction using patients own tissue versus implants.
All this is essential to reinstall a woman’s body image and confidence and ability to get back to a normal life. Take home message from her was – No matter what stage the Breast Cancer is detected, with the latest advances in the treatment there is hope of cure for many.
Dr. Sachin Trivedi, Director of Medical Oncology at HCG Mumbai spoke on the new anti-cancer treatment approach with immunotherapy.
He highlighted how immunotherapy has transformed the way cancer is treated and how it is improving the life of cancer patients and helping specialists even cure cancer.
He spoke on the role of comprehensive gene profiling (expanded genetic tests) in successful management of cancer.
Both speakers answered all the queries raised by the attending doctors during the Interactive session.
The meeting was attended by around 60 eminent practicing doctors of Oman, which included breast cancer specialists, surgeons, gynecologists, internists an family physicians – both from government and private health establishments.
Both the speakers emphasised the importance of collaboration in scientific exchanges and possibilities of leverage clinical skill set between colleagues in Oman and India. They promised to return to Oman again to strengthen ties with colleagues and people of Oman.
In his concluding remarks Dr. Sanjay Dalal, Founder of Muscat Family Physicians’ group extended their gratitude to the speakers for very informative & educative scientific session.
