Sayyid Asa'ad urges Global South to seek solution for Palestine

Muscat: Assigned by His Majesty Sultan Haitham bin Tarik, HH Sayyid Asa'ad bin Tarik Al Said, Deputy Prime Minister for International Relations and Cooperation Affairs, Personal Representative of His Majesty the Sultan, participated in the third virtual Leaders’ Summit of the Voice of the Global South, on Saturday.

In his speech, Sayyid Asa'ad stressed the need for cooperation in light of the diverse and serious challenges affecting the security and stability of the world. Recent times have witnessed political and economic upheavals and armed conflicts, increasing regional tensions. Sustainable solutions to these challenges can only come through dialogue, cooperation, and joint action."

Sayyid Asa'ad added: “The Palestinian issue requires a just and fair solution by this group and the rest of the international community."

He affirmed the right of the Palestinian people to self-determination and the establishment of an independent state on their land, to achieve peace and stability in the region, which has suffered from the continued illegal Israeli occupation of Palestinian and Arab lands since 1967.

"Israel has violated all relevant UN resolutions, disregarded international law and violated international human rights," he added.

"The Sultanate of Oman, through 'Oman Vision 2040', has drawn a roadmap to achieve a diversified and sustainable economy based on innovation and knowledge, as we believe that the future requires not only to develop the economy but also to protect the environment and ensure the well-being of entire society. At the forefront of these efforts is investment in sectors such as the blue economy, renewable energy and modern technology," he added.

He stated that the Sultanate of Oman has set ambitious goals to achieve zero carbon neutrality by 2050, through integrated strategies for renewable energy and improving energy efficiency, stressing that the Sultanate of Oman believes that achieving the sustainable development goals for all requires collective cooperation at the regional and international levels, for building prosperous and sustainable economies in the global south.

The Deputy Prime Minister for International Relations and Cooperation Affairs and Special Representative of His Majesty the Sultan, affirmed the Sultanate of Oman’s support for the principles of this summit, and emphasised constructive work with friends in the global south to achieve common goals and the aspirations of their peoples for development, prosperity, security and stability.

The summit discussed a wide range of issues affecting developing countries, most notably climate change and its impact on developing countries.

The summit also explored collaborative solutions to achieve sustainable development by promoting economic growth that is inclusive and environmentally sustainable, with a focus on achieving the Sustainable Development Goals.

He also extended special congratulations to the friendly Republic of India on the occasion of its Independence Day.

The meeting was under the chairmanship of Narendra Modi, Prime Minister of India with the participation of a number of heads of state and heads of government.
