MoCIIP launches program to train university students on developing industrial product standards

The Ministry of Commerce, Industry, and Investment Promotion is preparing to launch a new training program for university students nearing graduation. The program is designed to equip students with the necessary skills in developing industrial product standards, empower them with research and study skills, and help them form and manage technical teams in this field.

The program will familiarise students with international best practices in developing standards and managing industrial establishments. It also provides insight into regional and international standardisation organisations and their role in developing the industrial sector. Additionally, trainees will be able to draft standards for industrial products and understand the basics of determining technical specifications that ensure user safety and environmental protection.

Nadia bint Mohammed Al-Siyabi, a chemical expert at the Ministry of Commerce, Industry, and Investment Promotion, stated that this initiative is part of the Ministry's efforts to leverage the capabilities of graduating students and prepare them for the labour market. It also aims to raise their awareness of the importance of standards. She explained that the program will cover several key areas, including basic standards concepts, the role of regional and international standards organisations, and the relationship between the World Trade Organization (WTO) and standards.
Al-Siyabi emphasised that the program will also include field visits to local factories to observe production lines and the application of standards. She noted that the draft standards prepared by the students during the program will be incorporated into the plans for developing Omani standards, with the students' names included upon their issuance. Certificates of participation will also be awarded to the students.

Al-Siyabi stressed the program's importance in preparing students for the labour market. She highlighted that students are considered strategic economic assets for any country, especially in societies that rely on trade and investment. She noted that equipping students with the necessary knowledge, skills, and experiences, as well as international best practices in standardisation before graduation, contributes to opening job opportunities for them and encourages them to participate in developing and adopting international standards and environmentally and socially friendly solutions.
