New York: The Sultanate of Oman expressed its deep concern over the proliferation of small arms and light weapons, which constitutes a serious threat to international peace and security. It also contributes to fuelling armed conflicts and growing phenomena of terrorism and organised crime.
This came during the Sultanate of Oman’s speech delivered by First Secretary Mohammed bin Ali Al Shehhi at the United Nations conference to review the progress made in implementing the programme of action related to preventing, combating and eliminating the illicit trade in small arms and light weapons in all its aspects. Mohammed bin Ali Al Shehhi is the member of the Sultanate of Oman’s permanent delegation to the United Nations in New York.
The Sultanate of Oman affirmed its full commitment to the action programme related to preventing, combating and eliminating the illicit trade in these weapons, provided that this is part of an international collective effort in which all countries cooperate to serve common goals, foremost of which is maintaining security and stability.
The Sultanate of Oman reviewed the procedures and measures it has taken to strengthen the legal and institutional frameworks to combat the illicit trade in small and light weapons, which include strengthening national legislation by enacting, developing and updating national laws to align them with international standards, in addition to enhancing international cooperation through initiatives aimed at combating illicit arms trafficking and exchanging information and expertise to confront this phenomenon.
