Muscat: Registration of applications for both land and sea commercial aquaculture projects will start on Sunday for Omani institutions and companies wishing to establish commercial aquaculture projects.
The Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries allocated several aquaculture locations belonging to the ministry to commercial projects in the Governorates of Muscat, South A’Sharqiyah and Al Wusta. The one-month registration period is from August 7 to and September 8.
Among the ministry’s locations allocated for aquaculture projects that could be applied for are: Land Fish Farming, including Ras Madarka, Al Sa’adanat, Hitam Al Barr in the Wilayat of A’Duqm in Governorate of Al Wusta; Al Ruwais, Al Suweih, Sarj 2 in the Wilayat of Ja’alan Bani Bu Ali in Governorate of South A’Sharqiyah; and Al Jiri location in Governorate of Muscat.
The sea locations include Dhabab in the Wilayat of Quriyat in Governorate of Muscat. The area of the locations ranges from 4.5 hectares to 452.5 hectares. Fish farming, as well as natural fisheries contribute to the provision of fish in the Sultanate and various countries around the world, in addition to the local market.
Fish farming sector is one of the major productive sectors in the world; which contributes 50 per cent of fish production in the world. It is hoped that this percentage will increase to up to 60 per cent of fish production.
