100% rise in wheat purchase from Omani farmers
Muscat: The Oman Flour Mills Company announced the purchase of 10,000 tonnes of wheat crop from Omani farmers this year. This is an increase of up to 100 percent over the year 2023.
This comes within the framework of the company's plans to strengthen the food security system and encourage farmers to grow wheat. The company, which received the first shipment of Omani wheat crop, is working to purchase the locally grown crop from farmers and encourage its production for local and regional markets.
Haitham bin Mohammed al-Fannah, CEO of the Oman Flour Mills Company, stressed that the company supports farmers annually by purchasing Omani wheat through the purchase programme to expand the cultivation of the crop in cooperation with the Ministry of Agricultural Wealth, Fisheries and Water Resources, and to develop Omani wheat products and other products.
He said that the Oman Flour Mills Company seeks to encourage the production of Omani wheat and present it as an Omani product in the local and regional markets, noting that the number of farmers from whom the Omani wheat crop will be purchased during this year will exceed 95, compared to 65 farmers in the year. 2023, an increase of 45 percent.
He added that this reflects the company’s contributions to promoting wheat cultivation in the Sultanate of Oman as part of its strategy to strengthen the food security system and encourage farmers to grow it.
He explained that the increase in the quantity of wheat this year confirms that Omani wheat is accepted by consumers due to its high quality in the local and regional markets.
He pointed out that the Oman Flour Mills Company’s step to purchase the local wheat crop aims to expand its cultivation as it is an important strategic crop that contributes to achieving the food security strategy in the Sultanate of Oman.
