Royal Hospital applies modern technology in treating cholecystitis

Muscat: For the first time in the Sultanate of Oman, the Royal Hospital succeeded in using modern minimally invasive technologies for the treatment of a patient suffering from cholecystitis.

The operation involved the insertion of a metal stent into the internal cavity to drain the gallbladder, without the need for using external tubes.

Dr. Hisham Abdullah Al Dhahab, Senior Consultant of Gastroenterology and Advanced Interventional Endoscopy at the Royal Hospital, told Oman News Agency (ONA) that “the operation saw minimal surgical intervention, namely the use of ultrasound rays and the insertion of a metal stent through the stomach wall directly into the gallbladder”.

Al Dhahab pointed out that the application of this technique was prompted by the patient's old age and complex health condition (cardiac and brain diseases) that made it necessary to avoid conventional surgery.
