ROHM concludes 2023/24 season with Cairo Opera performance

Muscat: The Royal Opera House Muscat concluded its 2023/24 season with a captivating performance of Scheherazade by the Cairo Opera, directed by Walid Aouni.

Audiences filled the Royal Opera House of Musical Arts to experience the world of 1001 Nights through a dazzling dance performance by the Cairo Opera's Modern Dance Company.

Under the visionary direction of Walid Aouni, Artistic Director, Director, and Designer of the Egyptian Modern Dance Company, the performance spellbound audiences with its innovative interpretation of one of Arab history's most famous tales.

Aouni's reimagining of Scheherazade, inspired by Rimsky-Korsakov’s evocative score, featured unique staging and costumes that brought the story to life. “What you hear is a depiction of what can be read in the book or seen in our imaginations, such as the smell of a perfume or the feel or meaning of a rhythm: arguably no composer reaches as deeply into story, chasing musical expression to interpret sentences, as Rimsky-Korsakov did,” explained Aouni.

Founded in 1993, the Egyptian Modern Dance Company is the first-of-its-kind in the Arab world, having performed globally from Europe to Russia and across the Middle East.

This marks the company's second visit to Oman, following the successful presentation of Zorba the Great and El Leila El Kebira with the Cairo Opera Ballet during the 2023/24 season.

As the leading performing arts venue concludes its 2023/24 season, the Royal Opera House Muscat invites all its loyal customers to discover its cultural programme including daily tours of its main theatre and its unique permanent exhibition, Oman and the World: A Musical Journey. Additionally, ROHM will host its annual children’ssummer camp, focusing on the theme of the Animal World.

These workshops aim to teach children to capture the essence of animals through acting, connecting them with nature and sound. Led by local and international teachers, children will explore animal sounds, colours, and behaviours through various activities, discovering the limitless possibilities of theatre.
