Muscat: For highlighting the notable achievements of women in the maritime sector and being an essential partner in the country's growth, Oman celebrates International Women’s Day in the Maritime Sector, on May 18 each year.
The celebration recognises women’s vital role in the maritime sector and empowers them to work for specialisations in various fields.
Khadija Mubarak Al-Siyabi, marine safety specialist at the Ministry of Transport, Communications and Information Technology, said: "The current period of the renewed renaissance is witnessing the emergence of Omani women in important leadership positions in all fields, including the maritime sector, starting with marine navigation and engineering. The navy employs them in port management and logistics, in addition to preparation for advanced scientific research, which indicates widespread interest in empowering them in the maritime sector by providing training to Omani women and providing them with necessary skills.
"The government encourages companies, government and private institutions to provide job opportunities for women in the maritime sector and give incentives to them in this field."
She added that the women working in the maritime sector have contributed significantly to the maritime economy, noting that the sector today plays an essential role in the economy and contributes directly to strengthening women workforce in prominent positions in marine field.
For her part, Basma Hamad Al Hashimi, Chief Marine Navigation Officer at ASYAD Company, explained that working in the maritime sector is a source of pride for Omani women and receives wide praise from those concerned with the maritime sector, whether government or private, noting that she and her colleagues feel proud for the designation of a day for women working in the maritime sector.
She said that celebrating this occasion in Oman highlights their status, contributes to enriching their capabilities, and reflects the role they play in the maritime sector, noting that the women have received widespread applause for their work, and sharpening their skills to continuously advance their status.
This occasion comes in line with the International Maritime Organisation’s adoption in December 2021 of a decision to designate May 18 of each year as International Day for Women Working in the Maritime Sector.
The Sultanate of Oman, represented by the Ministry of Transport, Communications and Information Technology, participates in the celebration of International Women’s Day in the Maritime Sector every year.
It comes under the slogan 'Safe Horizons... Women Shape the Future of Maritime Safety'.
