Oman hosts international workshop on human rights data collection, progress indices

Muscat: A three-day international workshop kicked off in Muscat on Monday to discuss means of collecting data and indices for measuring the progress made in the field of human rights in accordance with international standards

The workshop is organised by the Oman Human Rights Commission (OHRC) in cooperation with the UN centre for training and documentation in the field of human rights for Southwest Asia and the Arab region.

Dr. Khalifa Abdullah Al Barwani, CEO of the National Centre for Statistics and Information (NCSI), said that the workshop aims to upgrade Omani capabilities in accomplishing related tasks through professional hands-on training.

OHRC Chairman Dr. Rashid Hamad Al Balushi said in a speech that the workshop is being attended by representatives of civil society organizations and representatives of government institutions.

The workshop provides insights about applying the UN standard methodology for collecting information on human rights and identifying relevant indicators at the national level.

Using indicators and adopting a standard human rights-based approach to data collection constitutes a way for countries and national human rights institutions to decide the extent to which individuals enjoy human rights.
