Ministry of Education marks Down Syndrome Day

Muscat: The Ministry of Education, represented by the Directorate-General of Special Education and Continuous Learning and the School of Intellectual Education, celebrated the Down Syndrome International Day, which this year comes under the slogan “Ending the Stereotype.”

The function was held under the patronage of artist Alia Al Farsi, in the presence of Dr. Thuraiya Al Rashidi, Director-General of the Directorate-General of Special Education and Continuous Learning at the School of Intellectual Education.

The ceremony coincides with the celebration of the Down Syndrome International Day, which falls on March 21 every year in accordance with United Nations General Assembly Resolution 149/66 of December 2011, which proclaims 21 March as International Down Syndrome Day to be observed annually to raise awareness.

The ceremony included the inauguration of the logo of the School of Intellectual Education, which includes symbolic connotations of the mentally disabled students who need care until they gradually acquire skills.

During the ceremony, the winning videos were shown carrying a message for people with Down Syndrome. After that, artist Alia Al Farsi, honoured the winners of the competition.

The celebration was accompanied by an exhibition aimed at highlighting the artistic works of students with Down Syndrome, and the presentation of the Banan Student Company, which is concerned with printing students’ drawings on fabric, in addition to the presentation of the “With Us, Your Lesson is More Enjoyable” initiative.

It is an initiative targeting students with mental disabilities, based on the principles of designing interactive electronic content, beginning with the analysis phase and ends with the production phase of interactive lessons in which the student is the focus of the learning process.
