27 dams in Oman retain rainwater to prevent floods

Muscat : The Ministry of Agriculture , Fisheries and Water Resources stated that the total amount of rainwater retained by 27 dams to protect against flood risks in a number of wilayats of the Sultanate of Oman amounted to more than 134 million cubic meters during the period from March 8 -11, 2024.    

Engineer Nasser bin Mohammed Al Battashi, Director General of the General Directorate of Water Resources Assessment at the Ministry of Agricultural Wealth, Fisheries and Water Resources, said: "The Wadi Dayqa Dam in the Wilayat of Quriyat in the Muscat Governorate has become full, which has a capacity of 100 million cubic metres. In Al Dhahirah Governorate, Al Salif Dam in Ibri, which has a capacity of one million cubic metres, and Surur Dam in the Wilayat of Dhank , which has a capacity of 1.29 million cubic metres, were filled. The Sudairiyin Dam in the Wilayat of Yanqul was also filled, which has a capacity of 0.24 million cubic metres."   

 He added that in the Wilayat of Mahdha in Al Buraimi Governorate, the dams of Wadi Haywan were filled with an amount of 0.01 million cubic metres, Masah with 0.03 million cubic metres, Abu Qala with 0.042 million cubic metres, Mahdha with 1.1 million cubic metres, and Al-Jawif with 0.42 million cubic metres.   

Al Batashi explained  that in North Al-Sharqiyah Governorate, the dams of the Wilayat of Al-Qabil  were full, as the amount of water retained in the Wadi Nam Dam reached 0.82 million cubic meters and in Al-Aqeedah Dam 0.04 million cubic meters. The amount of water retained in Al-Rassa Dam amounted to 0.98 million cubic meters, and in the Wilayat of Ibra, the Qafifa Dam was filled with an amount of water amounting to 0.927 million cubic meters.

While the Warid Dam recorded a storage rate of 0.702 million cubic metres, the amount of water retention in the Wadi Al-Oyoun Dam in the Wilayat of Sinaw reached 0.2 million cubic metres.   

Al Batashi stated that in the Wilayat of Al-Hamra  in the Al-Dakhiliyah Governorate, the Wadi Ghul Dam recorded 0.13 million cubic metres, while the Al-Awabi Dam in the Wilayat of Al-Awabi  in the South Al-Batinah Governorate recorded 0.045 million cubic metres. In the North Al Batinah Governorate, the Wadi Al Hilti and Al Salahi dams in the Wilayat of Sohar were filled with an amount of water amounting to 0.55 million cubic metres, the Al Jizzi Dam was filled with 5.4 million cubic metres, and the Aahen Dam in the Wilayat of Saham was filled with an amount of 6.8 million cubic metres.

Meanwhile, Al-Hawasna Dam in the Wilayat Al-Khaboura  recorded a filling rate of 1.68 million cubic metres. 

In Musandam Governorate, Al Sarooj Dam in the Wilayat of Madha  recorded 0.922 million cubic metres, while Sahana Dam in the same wilayat recorded 0.035 million cubic metres. The Protection Dam in the Wilayat of Sur in the South Al Sharqiyah Governorate recorded a water volume of 8.56 million cubic metres, and one of the dam’s gates was opened.
