UN coordinator for peace process warns of wider political and security calamity in Gaza

New York: Tor Wennesland, UN Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process warned of "a wider political and security calamity" as a result of the ongoing Israeli occupation aggression on the Gaza Strip and the escalating instability across the West Bank.

In a statement on the Situation in the Occupied Palestinian Territory, Wennesland said "There is a growing risk of a wider political and security calamity. This must be avoided at all costs."

"As the Holy Month of Ramadan has begun, we have now entered the sixth month of a devastating war in Gaza that will impact the Middle East for years to come. I call for the status quo at the holy sites in Jerusalem to be upheld and respected," Wennesland said.

The war in Gaza has significantly imperilled the fragile stability in the region, he said, adding "This year's Ramadan is marked by the rapidly deteriorating humanitarian crisis and a breakdown of law and order in Gaza, the increasing number of civilian casualties and mounting instability across the West Bank."

After over 150 days of war, the population of Gaza must see an end to the horrors they continue to endure, UN Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process said in the statement.

Meanwhile, Israeli occupation forces stormed last night the city of Jenin and its refugee camp in the occupied West Bank, leading to confrontations and infrastructure destruction, according to (WAFA) news agency.

The Israeli occupation forces also raided the city of Hebron and the town of Beit Ummar on today. They raided several Palestinian homes, conducted search operations, destroyed their contents, and assaulted the residents.
