Resident bags best actress jury prize for exceptional performance at Muscat International Film Festival

Muscat: The Muscat International Film Festival (MIFF) 2024 concluded with the highly anticipated closing ceremony, during which the competition awards were announced.

A moment of pride for Oman as Nilanjana Sha, an Omani resident, secured the Best Actress Jury Prize for her exceptional performance. At just 18 years old, Nilanjana, a recent graduate of Taism who pursued cinematic art studies at the University of Southern California, showcased her talent in the lead role of the Indian film “What the Birds Want to Say,” directed by Sudha Radhika, a film maker settled in Oman, representing Oman and leaving a significant impact.

The Omani feature film “The Watchtower,” directed by Nilanjana Sha, stood as Oman’s sole representative in the festival and earned a spot among the finalists. The film provided a unique glimpse into the new horizon of Omani cinema, captivating the audience with its rich narrative and stunning visuals.

Set against the mesmerizing backdrop of the mountain village of Al Hamra, “The Watch Tower” takes viewers on a compelling journey through the life of an elderly man, offering a fresh perspective on Oman’s cinematic potential. Nilanjana Sha’s youthful energy and creative vision, cultivated through her studies at the University of Southern California, were evident in the film’s creation, marking a standout debut for the budding director.

In a commendable move towards inclusivity, Omani actor Faisal Jandub, a member of the Blind Association Oman, portrayed the lead role, adding authenticity to the film and breaking barriers in Omani cinema. The ensemble cast, including Rebecca Olson and her two sons, took on the leading roles, with five-year-old Sam Olson as the main character of the film.

An exceptional aspect of “The Watchtower” lies in its exploration of Oman’s picturesque locations. The mountain village of Al Hamra becomes a character in itself, immersing the audience in the natural beauty and cultural richness of the region. The careful selection of locations not only enhances the film’s visual appeal but also plays a crucial role in conveying the story’s emotions and themes.

As the only feature film representing Oman at MIFF 2024, “The Watch Tower” signifies a promising chapter in Omani cinema. The film’s participation in the competition is a testament to the growing potential of the country’s film industry, showcasing Oman’s commitment to nurturing creativity and storytelling. Nilanjana Sha and her team, with “The Watchtower,” have successfully placed Oman on the international film stage, presenting a captivating addition to the global cinematic landscape
