Oman's junior cricketers shine bright at Asian stage

MUSCAT: Oman's junior cricketers have ignited hope for the future of the nation's cricketing prowess with an outstanding performance, clinching the ICC Men’s U19 Asia Division 2 Qualifier title in Bangkok, Thailand, on Tuesday.

In a stunning final showdown, Oman triumphed over Hong Kong, China, with an impressive 100-run victory, maintaining an undefeated streak throughout the tournament, which featured eight nations.

Led by captain Rahil Habibulla, the team displayed impeccable cricketing skills, securing not only the championship but also securing a coveted spot in the ICC Men’s U19 Asia Division 1.

Coached by former Oman international cricketers Syed Aamir Kaleem (head coach) and Syed Amir Ali (assistant coach), the team won all five matches, showcasing their dominance.

Speaking from Bangkok on Tuesday, captain Rahil said: "I am proud of my team and thank the coaching staff and management for their trust in us."

Habibulla highlighted the team's hard work and determination, stating their qualification for Division 1 as a great accomplishment. "The win in the final is a culmination of two months' journey that has been incredible," he added.

Coach Kaleem commended the team for their exceptional cricket and adaptability to the conditions, noting that 12 of the 14 players were participating in the ICC U19 Asia event for the first time.

He expressed gratitude to Oman Cricket for the opportunity to lead the team and praised the players for their unbeaten run and victory in the final.

Kaleem said: “The boys played extremely good cricket from the first to the final match. The way they adapted to the conditions was remarkable. Each player is a match-winner in the squad of 14. What was also creditable was the fact that 12 of the 14 were playing for the first time in the ICC U19 Asia event.”

Reflecting on the victory, Oman Cricket Chief Development Officer Duleep Mendis praised the team's brilliant performance, emphasising their unbeaten streak and the convincing win in the final as a testament to their excellence.

In his remarks to Times of Oman from OC headquarters in Muscat, he said: “I have high hopes for the future of these cricketers as they advance to the ICC Men’s U19 Division 1 Qualifier.”

Mendis added: “The boys and the support staff worked hard and the good preparations laid the foundation for the success. Before the departure to Bangkok, the boys were confident to qualify and they did it in style. I wish them all success ahead and hope the team with the support staff continue their excellent work.”

Oman and Hong Kong, China, will now advance to join Afghanistan, Nepal, UAE, and Singapore in the ICC Men’s U19 Asia Division 1, with the ultimate victor in the Division 1 Qualifier earning a coveted spot in the ICC Men’s U19 Cricket World Cup.
