Official opening of multi-purpose fishing port at Duqm announced

Muscat: The official opening of the multi-purpose fishing port at Duqm will be in February 2024.

The Special Economic Zone at Duqm announced that February be the opening of the multi-purpose marine fishing port in Duqm, which will contribute to increasing the demand for activities related to fish wealth, and attracting many fish industries as well as investment, especially since the region is rich in many types of diverse and high-quality fish wealth.

 The port is one of the large ports implemented by the Special Economic Zone at Duqm, in cooperation with the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources , at a cost of OMR 63 million. The length of its berths is 3.3 km, and the depth of the sea in the area is about 10 metres. In addition, there is a berth for large ships, and 6 other berths designated for various ships and the Royal Oman Police.

Engineer Abdullah bin Salem Al Hakamani, Director of the Technical Affairs Department in the Special Economic Zone at Duqm, confirmed that the multi-purpose fishing port is one of the strategic projects that the region relies on greatly. It is considered the largest fishing port in the Sultanate of Oman, with an area of ​​7.5 square kilometers. It will receive medium and large fishing vessels and small and wooden fishing vessels. It is planned in the future to support the food industries, tourism activities and other service activities in the Al Wusta Governorate.

 Al Hakmani said that the first phase of the project had ended, which included breakwaters, 3.3 km long, and another berth also for large ships, 875 meters long, in addition to 5 other floating berths for small fishing vessels, and a special berth for the Royal Oman Police. Pointing out that lands with an area of ​​more than 400,000 square meters were prepared and reclaimed, and another area of ​​75,000 square meters was allocated for tourism activities. It also included the construction of internal roads 2 km long, with a protection drainage system and a rainwater drainage system in the project, noting that there are floating docks and five berths for fishing vessels, and a bolt for the purpose of launching and removing ships to and from the sea.

Al Hakamani added that the second phase includes the construction of the upper infrastructure, for which more than OMR 18 million have been allocated, which are administrative buildings, service buildings, and housing for fishermen, in a system that also suits their nature, in addition to tourism activities and other services. Pointing out that the Special Economic Zone at Duqm recently signed a usufruct and development agreement with a consortium of companies, led by the Oman Investment Authority in partnership with a well-known international French company that has extensive experience in the field of fishing ports management.


 Al Hakamani explained that the alliance formed a company under the name “Duqm Marina” and is undertaking its work with regard to managing the project, controlling the entry and exit of trucks, organising the entry process for ships of all sizes, large, medium and small, and dealing with other investors who provide services such as an ice factory, and commercial services such as shops, and other services related to fishermen. The first phase of the area is about 7.5 square kilometers, and there are more than 20 projects in the area.
