MUSCAT: Official statistics reveal that the number of individuals registered for social protection benefits in Oman has surpassed 1.3 million since the commencement of registration until January 23.
Dr. Faisal Abdullah Al Farsi, CEO of the Social Protection Fund, disclosed that the breakdown of benefits includes 162,188 for the elderly, 1,128,669 for children, 15,983 for orphans, 10,484 for widows, and 31,934 for people with disabilities as of January 23.
In an interview, Al Farsi said, “The social protection programmes have been meticulously crafted in accordance with principles aligning with national trends, as outlined in the Basic Law of the State, Royal directives, and Oman Vision 2040.”
The social protection system, an integral part of Oman Vision 2040, emphasises well-being and social protection, aspiring towards a decent and sustainable life for all.
Aligned with societal aspirations and needs, the system aims to deliver welfare services and social safety networks, ensuring sustainable livelihoods for present and future generations. It seeks compatibility with economic and social developments, international practices, and effective financial contribution from stakeholders to achieve optimal distribution of available resources.
With the issuance of Royal Decree No. 52/2023, which promulgates the Social Protection Law, Oman entered a new phase under the Social Protection Fund, restructuring retirement systems, reforming social protection, and merging related institutions simultaneously and in record time. The initial step took place in 2021 with Royal Decree No. 33/2021, making Oman among the first countries to establish a comprehensive coverage system benefiting all members of society.
Al Farsi detailed the two main parts of the law: the cash benefits programme for social protection, fully funded from the state’s general budget, and the social insurance (retirement) branches programme, funded through employer and worker contributions.
He emphasised the system’s pivotal role in providing a decent standard of living for citizens, improving the living conditions of target groups, and contributing to economic revitalisation. Al Farsi highlighted the proactive protection offered by the system, reducing social fragility (poverty) and enhancing social balance.
Addressing the efficiency of the system, programme adequacy, and continuous evaluation, Al Farsi said, “His Majesty emphasises the importance of monitoring and evaluating the social protection system’s performance continuously, aligning with the vision and aspirations of His Majesty. The Social Protection Fund strives for distinguished performance, incorporating the latest technologies globally to facilitate and improve services.”
Regarding the commencement of social protection benefit disbursement, Al Farsi noted that the Social Protection Fund initiated disbursements on January 18, underscoring the continuous support and attention from His Majesty to ensure a decent living for all members of Omani society.
