Washington: U.S. President Donald Trump has received a letter from North Korean leader Kim Jong Un asking for a second meeting and the White House is already looking at scheduling one.
And a second summit between Donald Trump and Kim Jong Un is already in the works according to the White House.
White House Press Secretary Sarah Sanders said, "The President has received the letter from Kim Jong Un. It was a very warm, very positive letter." Sarah Sanders said that Kim asked for another meeting in that letter. And the administration is planning ahead for it.
But she wouldn't say whether the Supreme Leader might be coming to Washington. She added, "We will let you know when we have further details, but certainly something that we want to take place, and we will, already continue to work on making that happen" Relations have been rocky between the two leaders since their summit in June, with both sides accusing each other of slacking off on commitments. The meeting itself, and the joint statement made there, has also been criticised for not having enough concrete details. But some analysts say a second summit could bring more progress, especially when combined with recent signs of hope - like Kim's recent pledge to denuclearise by the end of Trump's first term. Sarah said, "A number of things that have taken place. The remains have come back. The hostages have returned. There's been no testing of missiles or nuclear material and of course the historic summit between the two leaders, and this letter is just further indication of the progress that we hope to continue to make."
When that second meeting might take place still isn't clear. There may be an opportunity at the sidelines of the UN general assembly in New York later this month. But National Security Advisor John Bolton has said he doesn't think Kim will show up.
