Hockey: Dhyan Chand festival celebrated with fanfare

MUSCAT: To commemorate the birth anniversary of the most outstanding hockey player to have played the game, Team Coorg and Friends of Naqvi Group held a friendly hockey to honour the legend Dhyan Chand with a match held at the Qurum Ground during the weekend.
The match was played in a very lively atmosphere with both teams displaying some good hockey. At the end of the match both teams were tied 2-2 and declared joint winners.
August 29 which is the birthday of the Late Major Dhyan Chand popular known as ‘Dada’ to his colleagues and followers is celebrated with much fervor in Oman.
The Embassy of India and the Oman Hockey Association have been responsible for many a tournament held in honour of the hockey wizard.
This year the 13th edition of the celebrations was organised by Team Coorg Muscat under the leadership of Bellu Kuttapa who has been the backbone of Team Coorg when it comes to organizing events such as the Indian Independence Cup and Dhyan Chand hockey festival, along with C. K. Somiah and Osama Rawat the founding members of the group.
Hockey veteran and technical advisor at Oman Hockey Association S. A. S. Naqvi who has been responsible for bringing hockey to the forefront in Oman was the chief guest at the event and later honoured by Team Coorg.
Jarvis Ahmed a popular face of hockey from the south Indian state of Kerala was the special guest along with Mohammed Rafi UTSC official were felicitated during the function.
The voice behind every hockey tournament held over the last few years Salih Thatcher was also handed over a plaque for his unstinting support for the game.
