Oman’s Royal Camel Corps added to Islamic World Heritage list

Rabat: In a new cultural achievement for the Sultanate of Oman, the Islamic World Heritage Committee of the Islamic World Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (ISESCO) was added the Royal Camel Corps to the list of the Islamic World Heritage.

This international recognition confirms the role of Royal Camel Corps in preserving an intangible cultural heritage of Omani breeds, caring for camels, and showcasing this ancient cultural heritage.

The Sultanate, represented by the Royal Court Affairs in cooperation with the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Youth and Oman National Commission for Education, Culture and Science has succeeded in listing the Royal Camel Corps to the heritage list of the ISESCO.

The listing of the Royal Camel Corps in ISESCO list of intangible heritage came during the participation of the Sultanate of Oman in the 11th meeting of the Islamic World Heritage Committee, held on the premises of the Islamic World Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation in the Moroccan capital of Rabat. The conference lasted for two days.

The inscription of the Royal Camel Corps, established on the Royal Court Affairs, is the first Omani institution concerned with showcasing the best practices of preserving the intangible cultural heritage represented by camels and associated social traditions.

It also reflects the world recognition of the role the Royal Camel Corps plays in the preservation of the intangible cultural heritage through protection of the thoroughbred Omani camels and the care and attention accorded on this deep-rooted cultural heritage.

The Royal Camel Corps works on preservation of all practices and arts associated with camels through the organisation of the competition on His Majesty’s Cup for Camel Race and the heritage festivals and participations in the various events associated with camel shows and skills and the international shows and seminars on camels within and outside the Sultanate.
