Sri Lanka Embassy marks International Migrants Day

Muscat: Migrants play a pivotal role in the socio-economic well-being and development of their respective families and dependents as well as the home and host countries.

Sri Lanka had been an international hotspot for both inward and outward migration from time immemorial. In the contemporary era, many Sri Lankans have temporarily and permanently migrated to several countries, immensely contributing to the socio-economic development of Sri Lanka as well as their respective host countries.

On this auspicious day of International Migrants Day 2023, the Embassy of Sri Lanka in Muscat, Oman wholeheartedly thanks all the Sri Lankans in Oman for their tireless contribution to the development of Sri Lanka and Oman, and also appreciates the government and people of Oman for accepting Sri Lankans as one of their preferred workforce.

The Sri Lankan migrant workers have been a pillar of strength that immensely supports the forex needs of Sri Lanka.

The United Nations observes the International Migrants Day on 18 December since the adoption of the Resolution on the International Convention on the Protection of the ‘Rights of All Migrant Workers and Members of their Families’ by all the member states including Sri Lanka on 18 December 1990 and subsequent proclamation of 18 December as the International Migrants Day since the year 2000.

This year it is commemorated in Sri Lanka under the theme of ‘Honouring the Contributions of Migrants and Respecting Their Rights’.

‘Promoting Safe Migration’ is the theme of IOM this year. The Embassy of Sri Lanka notes that a number of vulnerable Sri Lankans were exploited by unscrupulous middlemen and abandoned in the Sultanate of Oman without visa and work permit.

The Embassy advises all those who seek foreign employment to do so only through the licensed agencies and register with the Sri Lanka Foreign Employment Bureau before departure.
