Muscat: Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital in association with Muscat Family Physicians’ Group and Global Treatment Service organised an International Medical Conference on Functional Neurosurgery and Advances in Rehabilitation on December 8, 2023 in Muscat.
Dr. Akshat Kayal Sr. Consultant Stereotectic & Functional Neurosugeon’s talk was focused on the surgical treatment of Parkinson’s Disease with Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) surgery.
The presentation touched on the criteria for patient selection, benefits, risks and other nuances of DBS surgery.
The advanced techniques of tractographic targeting, electrophysiological monitoring, LFP sensing, directional stimulation and intraoperative O-Arm were introduced to the gathering.
He also spoke about the recent advances in DBS surgeries for Parkinson’s disease in form of newer devices, brain sensing technology and state of the art imaging softwares.
Finally, the concept of “DBS Troubleshooting Clinic” at KDAH where the patients who have undergone DBS surgeries in the past at any centre worldwide, who have inadequate benefit from DBS therapy are reviewed, corrected, reprogrammed and optimised to get better outcomes from their old DBS devices.
Dr. Abhishek Srivastava in his presentation focussed on Neurorehabilitation. It involves taking care of persons with stroke, traumatic brain and spinal cord injury and with chronic neurological disorders like multiple sclerosis and Parkinson’s disease to optimise their neurological and functional recovery.
