Environment ministry carries out campaign to protect coral reefs in Oman

Muscat: The Ministry of Environment and Climate Affairs carried out an exercise to protect the coral reef in the Daymaniyat Islands Reserve.
According to officials, the two-day campaign saw divers dive deep into the sea to remove the ‘Crown-of-Thorns Star Fish’ because the species harms the coral reef.
The ministry disclosed the information on its official Twitter handle. The statement released read, “As part of the Ministry of Environment and Climate Affairs' efforts to monitor the state of coral reefs and to protect them from human and natural impacts, a campaign to remove Crown-of-Thorns Star Fish was carried out in the Daymaniyat Islands Reserve. This is where the star fish is widespread and it affects the health and life of coral reefs.”
The campaign lasted two days with the participation of specialists from the Department of Marine Environment Conservation and the Department of Environment and Climate Affairs in the province with logistical support from the Oman Navigation Company,” the Ministry added.
