Muscat: Muriel Zeender Berset, Spouse of Dr. Alain Berset, President of the Swiss Confederation, today visited the Royal Opera House Muscat (ROHM), as part of the current official visit of the President and his spouse to the Sultanate of Oman.
The guest toured the ROHM and listened to a briefing about its departments and facilities, its performances and its programmes throughout the year. She also took note of the latest equipment used in the field of international musical concerts.
During her tour, the Spouse of the President of the Swiss Confederation learned about the architectural designs that characterize the ROHM which are derived from a blend of Oman architectural cultural heritage and global cultures.
The guest also visited Muttrah Souq (traditional market) and viewed its ancient and modern exhibits, including handicrafts, silverware and daggers, traditional weapons, traditional costumes, Omani Halwa sweets and various spices.
Moreover, the guest explored the corridors and alleys of the market and viewed its decorations that are inspired by the Omani environment, notably the use of local materials that maintained the market’s traditional character.
It is worth noting that Muttrah Souq is one of the oldest markets in the Sultanate of Oman. It constitutes a model of ancient oriental markets. Muttrah Souq is distinguished for its narrow, winding corridors covered with wooden ceilings that further extend into the city of Muttrah.
The entrance to Muttrah Souq begins with a memorable arched gateway facing the Sea of Oman and the Muttrah Sea Road. The opposite side of Muttrah Souq’s main arcade leads to the old city, where it gives access to visitors arriving from adjoining Omani villages, neighbourhoods and faraway cities.
During the two visits, the spouse of the President of the Swiss Confederation was accompanied by Dr. Madiha Ahmed Al Shaibani, Minister of Education (Head of the Mission of Honour).
