Muscat: A specialised medical team from the Royal Hospital succeeded in performing a complex operation to remove a tumour that developed in the chest of a 7-day-old baby.
The surgery, the first of its kind in the Sultanate of Oman, was conducted using advanced laparoscopic technology.
Dr. Ghalia Khalid Al-Ma'awali, Head of the medical team and paediatric surgeon/consultant at the Royal Hospital, told Oman News Agency (ONA) that a major challenge that faced the medical team was the nature of the tumour, which developed in a sensitive area of the rib cage, in the vicinity of the body's main artery and vein, making anaesthesia a further risk factor.
Dr. Ghalia affirmed that the ventilator was immediately removed from the patient after the surgical operation. The baby was then put under observation and he started recovering, she added.
