Children from Oman shine at regional competition in India

Muscat: Eight children from Oman won four trophies, three gold medals, and one silver medal during a series of regional abacus competitions held across India.
Held in the Indian cities of Kochi, Coimbatore, and Trichy throughout July, the 2018 Abacus Competitions challenged students in multiple categories to make use of their imagination, creativity, and computation skills in a series of tests.
More than 10,000 students competed in the three Indian cities, with eight children from the Sultanate earning four champion trophies, three gold medals, and one silver medal for their efforts.
The students were assessed through tests that required them to compute mathematical sums in three minutes, some with and some without the help of an abacus. The students from Oman who won champion trophies were grade-1 student Ajay Senthil Kumar, third-graders R. Laxmi Naarayanan and Shazana Falak, and five-year-old S. Swati Annapoorni.
The Sultanate’s gold medal winners were S. Soorya Narayanan from Indian School Darsait, Minnah Fathima from Indian School Wadi-Kabir, and Avinash Balamurugan from Indian School Muscat. Meanwhile, B. Anuraag from Indian School Darsait took home a silver medal.
