Muscat:
Some 48 years ago, board member of the Oman Astronomical Society and retired Geologist at PDO, Abdulwahab Al Busaidi, was a young man when he heard from his neighbours that His Majesty Sultan Qaboos bin Said had become the Sultan. He was in the island of Mombasa with his family.
Till this day, the moment during which he had heard His Majesty’s speech, still remains a beautiful memory. “One of the first speeches that His Majesty gave was to ask all Omanis who were living across the globe to come back and join His Majesty and the people of Oman in building the nation,” he said.
When he was asked about life in Oman before the 70s, Al Busaidi remembers it vividly as a very simple, tough, difficult life. “Life as we know it was totally different,” he explained, adding that “we had very little infrastructure, roads, hospitals, education; all these were almost non-existent”.
Today, he’s grateful to have had His Majesty as the Sultan: from no higher educational institutions, to having multiple universities and colleges across Oman, from small clinics in Muttrah to having hospitals and clinics in every corner of the country. His vision brought nothing but a sense of modernity, stability, and peace to the people of Oman. “We live in a very modern Oman, thanks to His Majesty’s wisdom,” he said.

“Almighty God has given him wisdom that you cannot find in this age and era, wisdom and vision that can go far in a very long term.”
Al Busaidi had met His Majesty twice, and to this day he recalls the wisdom the Sultan shared with him, which occupies a special place in his heart.
“He is the best of the best, may Allah protect him and give him a long life,” he concluded.
