Muscat: The World Health Organization (WHO), has called for an immediate cessation of military operations in the Gaza Strip while the organisation works on developing a plan to rescue the remaining patients from Al-Shifa Medical Hospital as soon as possible due to the dire situation there.
The Director-General of the WHO, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, appealed through the social media platform “X” that the organisation’s employees visited Al-Shifa Hospital yesterday and found that “the situation is deplorable,” noting that the hospital was out of service as a medical facility due to the scarcity of clean water, fuel, medicines, and other necessities.
The organisation’s director said that due to the time limits associated with the security situation, the team was only able to spend one hour inside the hospital, which they described as a "death zone" and the situation as "desperate." The team found a mass grave at the entrance to the hospital and was informed that more than 80 people were buried there.
He explained that the hospital entrances and courtyards are crowded with medical and solid waste, and patients and health workers expressed their fear for their health and safety.
