Madrid: Liverpool coach Jurgen Klopp on Friday joked about his poor record in major finals as his side prepares to take on Tottenham in the Champions League final in Madrid on Saturday.
The game in the Wanda Metropolitano Stadium comes a year after Liverpool lost 3-1 to Real Madrid in Kiev, meaning that the German coach has lost the last six finals his sides have played.
The German laughed at the idea that he was a "loser" and instead said that getting to so many finals was because he was so good at winning semifinals.
He also said that losing to Real Madrid a year ago would help his players against Spurs.
"We are a year older. Players like Trent (Alexander-Arnold) have 50 more games in their legs. Last year we surprised ourselves a little that we were in the final. We were not as consistent as we are now," he insisted.
He focused on the way his sides have lost previous finals, "If I were the reason for losing six finals, then everyone needs to worry. Last year was a world-class goal (Gareth Bale) and two strange goals we normally don't concede," he said.
"If I see myself as a 'loser', then that would be a problem. But I don't see myself like that," he added.
Klopp is looking forward to Saturday's game.
"We have two proper football teams in the final. I respect a lot what (Tottenham coach Mauricio) Pochettino did. He had a very talented group when he came here. How they have improved has been really impressive. It's a real football final. Both teams have to deal with that."
The Liverpool boss also stressed how happy he is at Liverpool.
"It's a wonderful club. We fell in love with each other. I think it's normal that I'm in a good mood. I don't waste time being in a bad mood before the game. We will be there and try to play a very positive game," he concluded.
