490 historic landmarks registered in South Al Batinah

Al Rustaq: A total of 490 historic and heritage landmarks in the wilayats of South Al Batinah Governorate are registered by the end of August 2023, according to the Department of Heritage and Tourism in South Al Batinah Governorate.

And 477 historic and heritage landmarks have been documented in the various wilayats of the governorate.

Dr. Al Mutasim bin Nasser Al Hilali, Director of Department of Heritage and Tourism in South Al Batinah Governorate said that many of them were renovated including Nakhal Fort, Al Hazm Fort, Barka Fort and Burj Al Khamis while work is underway for the renovation of Al Rustaq Fort.

The programmes, events and promotion of these landmarks would showcase the role they have played across history, he said, adding that the registration of the historic landmarks aims at protecting them under the umbrella of the Ministry of Heritage and Tourism.

A joint programme for the archaeological explorations and surveys was set by the team concerned at Sultan Qaboos University in cooperation with the Italian and Spanish missions, he said, adding that explorations were carried out in several areas including Al Tikha heritage site in the Wilayat of Al Rustaq, Halban heritage site in the Wilayat of Nakhal, Wadi Al Abyadh in the Wilayat of Nakhal and Masalamat heritage site at Wadi Al Ma’awil.
