Muscat: An earthquake of magnitude 4.8 on the Richter scale was recorded in the Sea of Oman on Saturday, October 21, 2023, according to the Earthquake Monitoring Centre (EMC).
Residents of South Al Sharqiyah Governorate felt the tremors.
The Earthquake Monitoring Centre (EMC) at Sultan Qaboos University said an earthquake was recorded in the Sea of Oman at 10.00 am MCT, at a depth of 5 km.
The quake was recorded 57 kms north-east of the wilayat of Sur in South Al Sharqiyah.
A number of residents of the South Al Sharqiyah Governorate in the wilayats of Sur, Jalan Bani Bu Ali, Jalan Bani Bu Hassan, Al Kamil and Al Wafi, felt the tremors. The intensity of the earthquake varied from one region to another depending on its proximity to the coastal areas.
Nasriya Abdullah from the wilayat of Jalan Bani Bu Ali said: “When the earthquake occurred, I felt as if two waves had passed under me and I heard a sound. My husband and children were sitting on the ground but they did not feel it.”
Another woman said: “I was inside the room when the earthquake occurred. I saw the windows and the bed shaking. I thought it was from the construction machinery in the neighboring house, but after people circulated news about the earthquake, I realised that an earthquake has happened.”
Another person said: “Frankly, it is a frightening feeling, and all the people in the state of Jalan Bu Hassan and Jalan Bani Bu Ali felt it, and some left their homes.”
It is noteworthy that on October 12, 2023, the Wilayat of Shaleem and the Al-Halaniyat Islands in the south of the Sultanate recorded an earthquake of magnitude 3.3 on the Richter scale.
