Weather update: Indirect impact of tropical depression expected to begin in Oman

Muscat: The latest reports of the National Center for Early Warning of Multiple Hazards stated that the center of the tropical depression is about 1,050 km away from the coast of the Sultanate of Oman and that the nearest rain mass is 850 km away and is moving towards the west-northwest of Dhofar Governorate and Al-Mahra Governorate in the Republic of Yemen.

Younis Al-Shezawi, a meteorologist from the National Center for Multi-Hazards Early Warning, said that the indirect effects may begin on Saturday, 21 October, 2023 with the influx of high and medium clouds with rising waves, coinciding with the development of the tropical depression into a tropical storm, adding that the tropical storm is likely to develop on Sunday, 22 October, 2023 into a tropical cyclone from first class.

He added that the wind speed around the tropical depression ranges from 17 to 20 knots, the deep air depression ranges from 28 to 34 knots, while the wind speed around the center of the tropical storm ranges from 34 to 63 knots. If the wind speed reaches 64 to 82 knots, the weather condition is classified as first class tropical cyclone.

He pointed out the possibility of the hurricane crossing the land on Monday after midnight, and it will reduce during its crossing to a tropical storm, and that the amount of rain expected to fall on Dhofar Governorate will start on Sunday, October 22, 2023 and will vary in intensity from 50 to 200 mm, and its peak will be on Monday from 200 to 600 mm.

He added that it is likely that the Hajar Mountains in the north of the Sultanate of Oman will witness an upper gully on Monday that will continue until next Thursday, and heavy rain amounts of between 70 and 100 mm are likely to fall.
