Muscat: The number of live births recorded in the Sultanate has gone up in the first quarter of the current year, according to the National Centre for Statistics and Information (NCSI).
The total number of live births registered at the various health institutions in the Sultanate increased during the first quarter of 2018 by 3.7 per cent to 18,920 compared to 18,238 for the same period in 2017, the NCSI has pointed out in its new data.
The statistics showed that the number of live births for Omanis during the first three months of 2018 stood at 17,496 including 9,051 males and 8,445 females.
The number of live births for expatriates stood at 1,424 including 721, males and 703 females.
January has seen the largest number of live births of both genders, including 6,452 live births of Omanis and 507 live births of expatriates.
It is worth mentioning that the year 2017 has seen 90,371 live births in the Sultanate, including 48,020 Omanis of whom 42,790 males and 41,230 females and the number of live births for expatriates amounted to 6,350 including 3,273 males and 3,078 females.
A report issued by the Ministry of Health indicated that the mothers who received healthcare during pregnancy increased to reach 99 per cent in 2016 and the early registration during the first three months of pregnancy stood at 67.9 per cent in 2016.
The number of hospitals offering healthcare services in the Sultanate of Oman stood at 74 in 2016. Of these, 25. 7 per cent were private hospitals.
The data also showed that there were 19 health centres for each 100, 000 of the population, the report added.
