Muscat: The courts of the Sultanate of Oman handled 143,960 lawsuits during 2022, an increase of 13,000 lawsuits over 2021 figures.
The lawsuits were undertaken by 59 courts, among them 45 courts of first instance, 13 courts of appeal and one Supreme Court.
As many as 8,824 cases were adjudicated by the Supreme Court, where 75% of them were settled. The courts of appeal undertook 42,845 cases, with a final decision rate of 64%, while the courts of first instance adjudicated and sealed 67% of the lawsuits filed to them.
A report issued by the Supreme Judicial Council stated the council’s keenness to expand the scope of judicial competencies. Accordingly, the number of judges during 2022 was increased to 324 judges, from 293 in 2021.
The report showed that the number of notary public departments in the governorates of Oman stood at 61. Notary public departments registered 194,717 new contracts by 2022, in addition to non-marriage or widowhood attestations.
