Environment Authority monitors endangered sooty falcons

Muscat: The islands located in the Governorates of Muscat and South Al Batinah are considered the most important breeding grounds for the endangered medium-sized sooty falcons.

The Environment Authority continues with its field surveys for the sooty falcons in the Sultanate of Oman which aimed to identify their numbers.

The project also tracks and monitors such birds including their food/nutrition system, tracking measurements of their nests and identifying the challenges they face in cooperation with the specialised local and international associations.

The sooty falcon is a semi-endangered bird on account of the reduction in their numbers at the world level.

The sooty falcon spends winters in the southeastern coast of Africa and the Republic of Madagascar.

It is worth mentioning that the field surveys of the project and monitoring sooty falcons are conducted in the Sultanate of Oman in May and October every year.
