Muscat: The Sultanate of Oman's Sultan Qaboos University Hospital (SQUH), has succeeded in treating complex cases of opening calcified and blocked coronary arteries.
Sultan Qaboos University Hospital succeeded in treating four complex cases of opening calcified and blocked coronary arteries by 100 percent for a long period, during the participation of doctors, nurses and technicians from the Cardiology and Catheterization Department at the university hospital in cooperation with Professor Dr. Galassi from Italy.
Dr. Fahd bin Abdullah Al Kindi - Senior Cardiologist and Catheterization Consultant and Head of the Catheterization Department at the Sultan Qaboos University Hospital - stated that these operations are very complex, and their technical treatment method is completely different from regular catheterization operations in terms of: risk and time taken, as it can sometimes take approximately 3 or 4 hours to complete the process successfully.
Al Kindi added that in these operations, the calcified and blocked artery is completely opened using special and precise tools, and usually requires entry from two arteries at the same time, whether through the hand or the thigh.
Dr. Al Kindi pointed out that the Department of Cardiology and Catheterization Department seeks to make the center specialise in this type of operation in the Sultanate, to serve patients who suffer from symptoms of chronic chest pain or weak heart muscle resulting from clogged arteries and who do not respond to medications.
