Muscat: The Ministry of Transport, Communications and Information Technology (MTCIT) has announced that it will undertake several strategic road projects this year.
To tap the tourism potential of Wilayat of Sur in South Al Sharqiyah Governorate, the Secretariat General of the Tender Board has awarded a contract worth over OMR4 million for the design and construction of a road linking Wadi Bani Jaber from the centre of the Wilayat of Sur.
As Wadi Bani Jaber is one of the picturesque sites in South Al Sharqiyah Governorate with a fascinating mountainous area and attractive topography for nature lovers, the phase two of the project will boost local tourism.
Yousef bin Abdullah Al Mejaini, Director of the Road Construction Department at the Directorate General of Roads and Land Transport at the Ministry of Transport, Communications and Information Technology said that the phase two of the project involves the construction of a 6km long road.
The work of phase two of the project is expected to commence soon and will take one year to complete, he said.
He also stressed the economic value of the project as better road facilitates will give greater access to the area and facilitate inflow of tourists. Citizens can also visit health centres, nearby villages and schools easily. He said that the road would contribute to the development of tourism in the area.
Abdullah bin Hamood Al Jabri, one of the citizens of the area said that the phase two of the project is vital as it would put an end to the suffering of dwellers of the area and facilitate their movement between villages.
It is worth mentioning that the Ministry of Transport, Communications and Information Technology has completed the works of phase one of the project which is the road from Wadi Al Minqal to Wadi Bani Jaber in the Wilayat of Sur to serve several villages.
The length is 16.7 kilometres with the width of 3.5 metres each lane having 34 box culverts and road shoulders with the width of 1.5 metres on each side.
The Ministry of Transport, Communications and Information Technology continues to implement the Liwa dual carriage project, which Links North Al Batinah Governorate from Liwa Roundabout on the Batinah Road to the intersection with the Batinah Expressway, with a length of (5.5) kilometres.
The project work, which has reached a completion rate of about 55 percent, includes raising the efficiency of the existing road from a single carriageway to a dual carriageway with two lanes of traffic in each direction, constructing new roundabouts, preparing entry and exit paths, and service roads on both sides of the dual carriageway.
