Shinas: The Aswad Fort in the Wilayat of Shinas in North Al Batinah Governorate with its archaeological identity reflects the deep –rooted history and its role in preserving the Omani heritage over the past several years.
Hassan bin Sulaiman Al Jabri, Director of the Department of Heritage and Tourism in North Al Batinah Governorate, said that Aswad Fort is an important historic structure in the Wilayat of Shinas.
The renovation work of the fort was completed in 2015, he added. He ascribed the name given to the rectangular fort to the village where it is located 22kms from the centre of the Wilayat of Shinas.
He said that, since its establishment, the fort has been used for housing and defence, which explains the presence of its two towers.
The main tower is at the western side of the fort and the other tower is located at its south eastern side.
The central area of the fort hosts other facilities used for housing and for the meetings of the villagers, he added.
It is worth mentioning that the fort was renovated by the Ministry of Heritage and Tourism including all its components and the fort has been redesigned, besides restoration of its walls, gates, halls and internal facilities and its two towers.
