Barr Al Hikman is known for its mesmerising beauty of pristine coastlines of stunning white sandy beaches and crystal-clear turquoise waters.
How to get there
Located about 4-5 hours from Muscat, your 3rd hour of this drive will have taken you to parts of Oman that see wandering camels sometimes crossing the road, they can seem quite camouflaged against the landscape so make sure to keep a look out for them!
The last stretch of the journey involves approximately a 45 minute drive in the ‘sabkha’ with no network. Directions can be confusing as there are no real roads, however, it is stunning to experience this drive where it feels like you have landed on the moon with an almost 360 degree view of vast, open landscape. A 4wd is recommended as there is the possibility of getting stuck. Going in groups where possible -as with all offroad adventures- is advisable.
While you can be escorted there from a camp within the area, it is always a good idea to have downloaded an offline map to follow and to bring enough water with you in case of emergency.

The synchrony of mangroves, lagoons, and salt flats creates a uniquely captivating landscape that makes you feel as if you have flown yourself to a faraway tropical paradise, the lack of wifi or phone network here makes it all the more special; reminding us to be more present and, for a moment, silencing the notifications that keep bringing us back to our screens.

Many kite surfers visit this spot to enjoy perfect wind conditions and a choice between surfing in the waves or in the flat lagoon that makes it easier for practicing or trying out new jumps and tricks!
Visitors may also choose paddleboarding or kayaking as a great way to explore the lagoons.
