Muscat: Within two year of its operation, Sultan Qaboos Comprehensive Cancer Care and Research Centre (SQCCCRC) has been able to provide a number of advanced therapeutic services and adopt sophisticated technologies in the field of cancer treatment in the Sultanate of Oman and the region.
While incorporating the most sophisticated technologies, its experts and specialists are striving to improve the quality of healthcare, tests, diagnosis, and treatment of cancer cases.
Professor Dr. Mansoor Saif Al Manthari, Head of the centre’s operational committee, said: “In less than two years from the opening, the medical team of the centre was able to introduce more than 15 new therapeutic and diagnostic services that contributed to enhancing the accuracy and efficiency of treatments, reducing side effects and providing therapeutic services to the beneficiaries.”
He emphasised that obtaining accreditation from the International Joint Committee for Accreditation of Health Establishments by the centre within a short time is a confirmation of the centre’s commitment to providing a comprehensive medical care in accordance with the highest international standards for Omanis, residents and cancer patients in the region.
He explained that the centre, since its operation, has provided a number of diagnostic, therapeutic and rehabilitation services and advanced research projects which contributed to enhancing the accuracy of medical examinations and treatment results for the patients. The centre has started using the technique of implanting radioactive pips into the prostate for low-dose brachytherapy (LDR) therapy, which has been made available for the first time for prostate cancer patients in the region.
He also stated that the centre offers the services of high-dose brachytherapy HDR for tumours, which is based on delivering radioactive substance into the affected organ through tubes to eliminate cancer cells. This type of treatment is mainly used to treat cervical and prostate cancer and is being used to treat a number of other cancers as well.
He also stated that the radiotherapy team was successful in treating a number of cases of trigeminal neuralgia, brain and bones and spinal cord tumours and other complex cases using the radiosurgery with the automated robot (CyberKnife S7). This technique eliminates cancerous tumours using the SRS surgery without the need for any surgical incisions.
He said that the centre provides infrastructure and interactive environment to support the patients and volunteers and motivates researchers to conduct research work so that their application can be used in practice for the benefit of the patients. Utilising the results of these researches will help in protective, diagnostic and therapeutic applications, besides enhancing partnerships with research establishments inside the Sultanate and abroad.
