Muscat: More than 1,400 people, including families, voted to select 12 board members of Pakistan Social Club (PSC).
The 12 elected members are Mian Mohammed Munir, Mohammed Zaem Akhtar, Chaudhary Asghar Ali, Imran Iqbal , Kashf Ahmed Zaem, Muhammad Abbas Chaudury, Qamar Riaz, Shoukat Hussain, Nasir Maroof, Kaleem Akhtar, Mohammad Ali Fazal, and Shabbir Ahmed Nadeem. They will each serve a two-year term from 2018-2020. Following the election, the 12 members met and elected Mian Mohammed Munir as their President, Shabbir Ahmed Nadeem as Vice President, Mohammed Zaem Akhtar as Secretary General, and Chaudhury Asghar Ali as Finance Secretary.
Mian Mohammed, who was elected to the board for the third time, said, “I would like to thank my community for choosing me Chairman for the third time. I wish that every single country fellow living in the Sultanate should have access to the club and receive benefits from it, and I mean it.’’
This was the largest AGMs in the club’s history and one of the few times it has held an election.
Every voter was verified by their Oman residence card and thumb impressions to ensure transparency and the integrity of the election.
The election committee was led by Arshad Ali Khan who, alongside his team, worked into the early hours of the morning to ensure the entire process was free and fair.
Speaking to the Times of Oman, Mohammad Zaem Akhtar said, “I feel proud to be re-elected for my third term as Secretary General. You could say this is my hat-trick. It shows that people have trust in me, resulting in my selection for the third time in a row. I feel its a reflection of the service I have delivered during my terms.”
He added, “I submitted a plan to boost relations between our community, the Omani community, and other resident communities in Oman. This year we are committed to boosting multilateral ties and lifting the standards of our events. That includes adding two more wings. We currently have 8 and intend to have 10 by the end of the year.” “When I was first elected there were no wings. During my first tenure we added four. In my second term we added an additional four, and this year we will be adding two more, and will increase that number if the need for it arises.”
Discussing the club’s plans for the new term, Zaem said, “At the moment we have only one branch, in Muscat. Anyone who is living in Suhar, Buraimi or Salalah has to travel here for functions. So our main goal for this term is to establish a branch each in Salalah, Suhar and Buraimi.”
“Every month they would hold functions, so that members in those areas won’t have to travel all the way to Muscat. We started this dream one year ago, when we applied to the Ministry and embassy for the correct permissions, and we expect to open our first branch in Salalah in around three months, followed by one in Suhar.”
“Over the next 2 years, we will continue to work to ensure that the maximum number of people residing in those areas can receive benefits from the club.”
